Surgery Instructions

Preoperative Phone Call:

One of our nurses will call you before your surgery to go over your health history and medications. Please have your medication list readily available during this call. They will also need you to confirm the procedure you are having and which eye you are having that procedure on.

When should I arrive? What is my surgery time?

Surgery times are not set until the business day prior to surgery and are subject to change. You will receive a phone call from the surgery center on the business day prior to your surgery in the afternoon to confirm your arrival time. Only one person will be allowed to come with you into the surgery center. 

 

The Night Before Surgery

  • Take all medications as usual

  • Shower/Bathe and shampoo your hair to reduce the chance if infection.

  • If your surgery is before noon, do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

  • If your surgery is after noon, do not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to your arrival time. This includes gum, candy, mints and lozenges.  

 

The Day of Surgery

  • Before you leave home, wash your face thoroughly with soap and water

  • Do NOT wear jewelry, piercings, or place any makeup, ointments, moisturizers, etc on your skin. All body piercing must be removed.

  • With a sip of water, take all of your medications as discussed on the preoperative phone call.

 

What should I bring with me to surgery?

  • Wear loose fitting clothes that are easy to get on and off, appropriate for the season.

  • Shoes with covered toes, no backless shoes.

  • Bring this surgery packet including all of this paperwork and especially your consent form.

  • All your medical paperwork including insurance cards, photo ID, and if you have them a copy of your : advance directives, living will, power of attorney.

  • A responsible adult to drive you home- uber and lyft, along with any other rideshare/public transportation are not allowed. 

 

 

What will happen when I arrive?

  • You will walk into suite 108, which is our waiting area. Please sign in and have a seat. A staff member will check in with you within 15 minutes.

  • The admitting clerk will take you to the surgery suite to be checked in and review your paperwork. Copays and deductibles will be collected at this time.

  • We will put a surgical gown over your clothes along with shoe covers and a surgical bonnet.  

  • Patients having eyelid surgery will need to change into a surgical gown. 

  • A nurse will call you into the preparation room where we will start a series of eye drops and obtain IV access. 

  • Your anesthesia provider and surgeon will visit you prior to surgery to review the surgery and answer any questions.

 

What should I do if something changes between now and surgery?

If you become ill with a cold, fever, rash or infection or otherwise cannot have surgery, please call the surgery center immediately at 209-948-3241.
